Was Socrates a Humanist?

Socrates the Humanist

Well for starters Humanist means a person having a strong interest in or concern for human welfare, values, and dignity. It also means that people have free will to believe people have a role in life. They have the understanding that they can be and do anything good with their life. From what I learned in class Socrates was the worlds first humanist. Socrates believed that philosophy should achieve strong results for the greater well-being of our society. Socrates worked to establish a ethical system based on the human reason than the theological doctrine. He strongly believed that the more a person knew the greater a person was able to make choices that would bring true happiness to the person. Socrates pointed out that ultimate wisdom comes from with oneself. He wanted people to understand that the way we think, talk, and make life decisions was based on ourselves, and only tru happiness could come from us.
