Was Socrates a Humanist?

Socrates the Humanist

Well for starters Humanist means a person having a strong interest in or concern for human welfare, values, and dignity. It also means that people have free will to believe people have a role in life. They have the understanding that they can be and do anything good with their life. From what I learned in class Socrates was the worlds first humanist. Socrates believed that philosophy should achieve strong results for the greater well-being of our society. Socrates worked to establish a ethical system based on the human reason than the theological doctrine. He strongly believed that the more a person knew the greater a person was able to make choices that would bring true happiness to the person. Socrates pointed out that ultimate wisdom comes from with oneself. He wanted people to understand that the way we think, talk, and make life decisions was based on ourselves, and only tru happiness could come from us.

The Development of Seafaring Through New Controversial Theories "Resarch Project"

This week we worked on our research projects and I decided to write on the Development of Seafaring through New Controversial Theories. I found the project to be a bit stressful because at times it was hard to find certain information on the topic. One paragraph that I thought was strong in my essay was my intro: Starting from the late Paleolithic era, a new way of settlement had arisen. This new method was based on more means of transport, shipment, and convenience rather than any other reason for settlement. The reasons for these decisions of settlement were brought about by a set of new controversial theories about peopling the Americas. One of these theories was known as the “Kelp Highway”, which proposed a coastal route in order to provide convenience and efficiency when it came to having enough resources (Vancouver Sun, 2009). The other theory was the “Polynesian Thesis”, which proposed oceanic routes from the South Pacific and gave settlers the chance to venture out of their comfort zone and explore. Based on what each of these new theories presents, it can be concluded that they are in their own way convincing enough to promote relocation of early maritime settlers because of the need for basic use of these routes. It would most definitely matter if any of the maritime settlement theses proved to be true because of the wealth of knowledge one would be able to intake through experiencing how and why these early settlers chose these specific routes rather than any other. All in all when you do a research paper you do find yourself teaching yourself alloy of new things about the topic.

Sand, Silk, Sea

This week in class we talked about the silk, sand, and sea roads. The silk road had to deal with china and Asia, the goods they had were silk, ivory, gold, and agriculture. Some challenges they faced were wealth changes, economic policies, spread of religion, and lastly they were challenged by mountain travel. Second one was the sand roads, their goods were salt, gold, and slaves. The difficulty about this road was that it actually wasn’t a physical road; they trusted the camels to be their navigation and get them where they needed to be. The challenges of this road were that there was no water in the desert or food, and the weather was too hot. Lastly the sea road was traveled by boat on the sea. Their goods were spices, livestock, slaves, silk, and mass markets.

Yes on Subjugation

This week in class we discussed if subjugation is inevitable in human society’s? I think that subjugation is in fact inevitable in societies, because I feel that if we have presidents, laws, and police forces that we will always have rule and regulations to follow. These examples show that there will always be someone more powerful over us. When I say that there will always be someone more powerful over us I don’t say that in a negative way, us as Americans may still live a great life we just won’t be allowed to do everything in this world without a say so or consequence. I feel that subjugation means to be under control or conquer, and for so many years and centuries we have had higher people over us, making laws, and rules to follow.

The Gospel Of Matthew 70-100 C.E

In the document “The Gospel of Matthew” explained how faithful and giving Matthews Jesus was. “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God”, “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called sons of God”. It expressed how if we are obedient and do what God asks of us that we will be blessed, God will see the good we do and he will bless us with far more great things that we could imagine. This passage also explained how God was all we ever needed, if we needed food God would provide, if we were weak and alone God would provide us with comfort, if we called upon to God he would hear us and help unconditionally. They made it known that if you needed anything God would always be there to bless you. God was unfailing and blessed those who obeyed his commands.

A Pyramid Text

This passage "A Pyramid Text" explained how death was a positive, happy thing to encounter. The person in the text was explaining how a gatekeeper would come take Teti's  hand and take him to heaven to be reunited with his father Geb. The tone of this passage was calming, it made me feel as if going to the afterlife would be something enjoyable. He expressed to Teti that his father Geb would caress him, it made me wonder why he would say such a thing? I felt that maybe he said that because he feels Teti is hurting from being apart from his father and that he needs comfort. Towards the end of the passage it said "As ordered done for you by Geb your father, rise up, O Teti, you shall not die". That phrase came off to me that even though Teti might go to the after life to be with his father they he shall never die, that being in the afterlife is only the beginning to eternal life.
